Every morning I drive over a long wooden bridge that spans Harper Creek, and every morning I scan the water’s edge for a glimpse of a Great Blue Heron. Most of the time, I’m lucky. Once, I even had one fly right over the hood of my car, skimming the water on either side of the bridge and only rising enough to clear my decelerating vehicle by a meager two feet! Sometimes I might even spy the long white neck of an Egret, or be able o discern the telling characteristics of a Bald Eagle soaring over the Chesapeake Bay. More often, I see Ospreys hunting fish in the waters of the creeks that spot the landscape of Patuxent River.
This morning I won’t be able to play my little game of Where’s Waldo with the Herons… I’ll be heading in the opposite direction, up to La Plata for an advanced motorcycle course.
Is there something you look forward to on your way into work each morning?
